The Beer Is Good at Fiddler's Hearth (RECAP)

The beer really is good at Fiddler's Hearth... very good.

Unless you've been living under a rock for the last couple of months, you've heard that Jeremy, Sean and I have been working on the premier craft beer event of the summer. This "2nd showing," as the tap menu says, was intended to bring together not only some of the most difficult to find and highest rated beers available, but also several specialty beers from our great local breweries.

Based on the success of the last "The Beer Is Good at Fiddler's Hearth" event in November, people knew that this wasn't a typical tap takeover, evident by the 20 or 30 people standing outside before the pub opened, waiting to get a good seat and their first round. The tap list had been posted a few days prior, but the only specific scheduling details people knew were that KBS would be tapped at 11am and Black Note at 6pm. We know.. it was a bit manipulative to space these beers in such a way that may entice people to stay many hours between tappings, but I didn't see anyone complaining.

My big-ass glass of KBS
I was honored with the task of writing the tapping schedule for all 33 beers that were planned for the event. My strategy was this - 17 beers on tap right at 11 am (15 regular, 2 cask), giving people 4 hours to "responsibly" sample as many of them as they wanted. At each hour starting at 3pm, 2-3 taps were pulled based on what I thought would be the least popular, and the same amount of new beers were added.

Trying to stay somewhat sober during the first 4 hours, I did a lot of people watching, a lot of welcoming, and making sure everyone was having a great time. The atmosphere in the room evolved greatly over the first few hours, starting with many keeping to themselves and talking softly, to a good roar of discussions, laughter and interaction with complete strangers. To me, this is what craft beer is all about - lubricating the social friction of everyday life, and bonding over the most basic of necessities (yes, necessity), beer... really damn good beer.

Some of the highlights for those who weren't able to make it included a tweaked version of ThaI.P.A from Bare Hands in a cask, two one-off beers from Four Horsemen, a first-ever cask of Greenbush 1825 with Michigan Raspberries, a tasting-room only keg of Haggard Jo from Flat 12, very rare keg of Tiger Jelly from 3 Floyds, and of course, KBS and Black Note. The rest of the beers can be found here, but they were all chosen for their quality and popularity.

Founders KBS was the first to kick, around 2pm, and I was asked by the owner of Fiddler's to announce it's demise. This was unfortunate timing, as the last couple of beers I had went down a little too quickly, thus ensuring my filter completely coming off, and the f-bomb getting dropped for all to enjoy. The next announcement was much more family friendly, informing everyone that the special Four Horsemen beer, American Wheat, had also sold out, Greenbush PhD had been added, and a few other beers had been rotated in. The crowd cheered with excitement after mentioning that PhD is a malt liquor!

Huge glass of Black Note
The most popular beers yesterday, the ones that sold out, include KBS, Four Horsemen American Wheat and Porter, 3 Floyds Jinx Proof, Flat 12 Haggard Jo, Bare Hands ThaIPA cask, and many more not far behind that. You people were thirsty! Much to my surprise though, Bell's Black Note was still available on Sunday! This made for enjoying a glass in a much less crowded pub so much more enjoyable, and every sip was fantastic!

In addition to the great beer and food available all day, there was surprise entertainment on the back patio! While ducking out for a bit of fresh air, I encountered a group of gentlemen rocking out to the musical stylings of Natalie Merchant on a cell phone. To say they were just singing along would be an embarrassingly inadequate. These crooners hit every high note masterfully, and followed up this performance with a flawless rendition of Will Smith's "Big Willy Style." Brava!

Often times events don't live up to the hype, but I think this is an exception. The food lineup was as incredible as the tap list, everyone seemed to have a great time, there was plenty of schwag, brewery reps and distribution reps came to talk beer, and lots of staff on hand to get beer out quickly. Big thanks to my friends Jeremy and Sean, and the entire staff of Fiddler's for their work with getting this together. Also many thanks to the breweries that participated in this event with incredible specialty beers, without which this would not have been possible - Four Horsemen, Bare Hands, Flat 12, Greenbush, 3 Floyds and Bell's, you all demonstrated why the Midwest is the best region for beer! This event was another huge success, the pub was busy the entire time, and unlike a typical day at a restaurant, there were no slow times.

So what did you think of the beers? Any favorites? Any surprises? Maybe even some that you didn't like? I'd love to hear your opinion so that we can make next time even better! Thanks for coming, we hope you had a great time, Cheers!

Flat 12 at Fiddler's Hearth Recap

Flat 12 Bleeding Heart IPA Extravaganza

In case you missed it, there were some really great beers from Flat 12 on last night such as Winter Cycle, Big Black Dog, Walkabout, Super Bravo 46, and yes, Bleeding Heart.

Super Bravo 46, Winter Cycle and Big Black Dog were all new to me, so I made a point to sample each, while saving my B.A.C. for one of my top 10 favorites - Bleeding Heart. While I've never had a bad beer by Flat 12, I wasn't a fan of the English style Super Bravo, but that's likely due to the fact that I usually don't like English style ales. BBD and Winter Cycle however... extremely delicious!

As you can see from the picture above, Bleeding Heart was VERY popular last night, with the keg blowing in 25 minutes and nearly non-stop pouring by the bartender.

For the first time while writing about beer, I can say that I had a hand in hyping a beer in our area with Bleeding Heart, purely by accident. When Jeremy (Bar Manager, Fiddler's Hearth) and I visited Flat 12 for some sampling prior to "The Beer Is Good at Fiddler's Hearth" party back in November, they poured us a glass of it while saying, "We have this IPA made with blood oranges and we think it's a lot of fun." From then on, Jeremy and I were hooked to the point that I even brought a growler back to South Bend to share with about 20 people, many of which also became immediate fans. When I found out that Jeremy had worked hard at getting a keg of it up here, I couldn't wait to spread the word (or steal the keg for myself, it was a tough decision).

But I digress... Another successful evening of great craft beer from one of my favorite breweries at one of my favorite pubs. Thanks to all for coming out!

Michigan Brewery Tour (Sponsored by Fiddler's Hearth)

So here is the reason I've been so tight-lipped about my planned brewery/pub trip... My friends at Fiddler's Hearth are planning a Michigan Brewery Tour on April 7th! For $40, you will have the opportunity to hit Founders, Bell's, Hopcat, Arcadia and Dark Horse, all while not having to worry about driving! Along with safe transportation, the trip will also include a light breakfast at Fiddler's and pizza at Dark Horse!

Reserve your spot in person while you still can and ready your best drinkin' hat (responsibly, of course), April 7th is going to be a blast!

Fiddler's Hearth Tap List

Someone who follows the blog was kind enough to snap this pic of the Fiddler's Hearth Beer menu Tuesday night. Although the taps change frequently, many of these will continue to be on tap. Also, as of yesterday, they tapped Brother Benjamin from Greenbush!

Fiddler's Hearth Beer Dinner on Dec 28th

Received word from Sean over at Fiddler's Hearth (Main St., South Bend) regarding a beer pairing dinner taking place on December 28th. Looks like a great lineup of food and beer for a very reasonable price. I've definitely never had a bad meal from this restaurant!

Bell's Quinannan Falls on tap at Fiddler's Hearth

Although the point of my trip to Fiddler's Hearth last Thursday was to taste some new Greenbush beers, I found myself addicted to Bell's Quinannan Falls Lager. Crisp and dry like a German pils, it is also very hopped up, giving it a fantastic piney and floral taste.

I had no idea Fiddler's Hearth was getting this beer, so it was a nice surprise to have an opportunity to experience something I've very much been looking forward to. If you missed it on Wednesday/Thursday, you'll again have a chance at it Tuesday, when it makes its next appearance. You have to to try this yourself to understand how good it really is...

Greenbush food pairing at Fiddler's Hearth (Recap)

I must admit, I was fairly oblivious to the reason for the Greenbush food pairing last Thursday night at Fiddler's Hearth. I just figured they did it for the hell of it... but as I came to find out, it was for the Eat. Drink. Downtown South Bend "Third Thursday" event.

The special for the night was "Three Greenbush Brewery tasters paired with three unique sliders." Greenbush beer is always very good, and I would have likely been content with drinking a few different options without a corresponding food pairing, however a fellow patron ordered the sliders/tasters and when I saw what was served, I had to give them a try. I'm no foodie, I leave that up to Michele at South Bend Foodies, but I certainly enjoy great tasting food, and that's just what I got.

More about the 3 Pairings...

Beer: Greenbush Jadis Winter White. A Belgian style pale brewed with cloves, cardamom, and orange peel. 6.1%, 20 IBUs
Slider: Salmon Cake, Spring Greens, and Remoulade on a homemade Pretzel Bun.

Beer: Greenbush Ursus Old Winter Ale. An old ale brewed with an abundance of English and caramel malts, pureed dates, and a rounded hop bitterness. 8.9%, 47 IBUs
Slider: Pit Ham, with Smoked Gouda, and Carrot Chutney on a homemade Pretzel Bun.

Beer: Greenbush Anger Black IPA. Black IPA brewed with Belgian dark and british chocolate malts, dry hopped for an intense aroma. 7.6%, 85 IBUs
Slider: Lamb Sausage with Sharp Cheddar and Caramelized Onions on a Rosemary Bun.

When it comes to beer, I'm very adventurous, but food... not so much. I don't even know what Remoulade is; it sounds made-up to me. Carrot Chutney? Deal breaker. However, since the dish had a built-in beer component, I figured it would be at least half-good.

Tackling each slider with its paired beer was nothing short of amazing! I've never been into food pairing before, since I usually prefer to savor beer on its own. The food and beer was incredible! Together they formed one of the best meals I've ever had. I would regularly eat these sliders, I hope Fiddler's Hearth decides to keep them on the menu!

Food aside, the Greenbush beer was fantastic, as is the norm with them. Anger is my favorite Black IPA, and I never turn down an opportunity to enjoy a pint. Jadis and Ursus were new to me, but both extremely good. Jadis reminded me of 3 Floyds/Dogfish Head "Poppaskull" due to its liberal use of cardamom, which makes this beer taste like Thanksgiving (obviously a good thing). Ursus was just as delicious with its sweet malt, dark fruit and slight bitterness, resulting in a great cold-weather sipping beer.

After this experience, I can't wait to see what "Eat. Drink. Downtown South Bend." brings the next time around!

**Not accustomed to taking pictures of my food, I didn't think to do it until after the party in my mouth was over. If you happen to have a pictures of the dish that was served, please email me (andy@thebeerisgood.com) so I can add it here. Cheers!

Greenbush invades Fiddler's Hearth!

We received word from Ben Amster over at Indiana Beer letting us know that Greenbush is sending down 6 beers to be put on tap at Fiddler's Hearth (Main Street, South Bend) Thursday December 15th, starting at 5pm. No word yet on which ones will be on tap, but I've been told that there will be a couple of beers for this event only, along with some special food pairings.

Should be a fun night of great beer, food and people, so I hope you join us!

A visit to Sun King Brewery (Indianapolis, IN)

My craft beer hobby has been an embarrassment of riches lately, with trips to Sun King, Flat 12, a Craft Beer Party, etc. As a result, a few things I've meant to share with my fellow beer geeks have been neglected, one of which is the road trip to Indianapolis that Jeremy (Fiddler's Hearth) and I went on the week before The Beer Is Good at Fiddler's Hearth.

The road trip consisted of three brewery stops, starting with Sun King, then Flat 12, and finally Barley Island. Our visit to both Sun King and Flat 12 was incredible, so I plan to do two separate posts on them to cover each in detail. The mission was to drive from South Bend to Indy to pick up kegs of Sun King beer to have on tap at Fiddler's Hearth. Once we had the kegs, we intended to make a very quick trip to Flat 12 before heading home. We planned to spend about a half hour at each brewery... it didn't exactly work out that way.

Opening in 2009, Sun King is the first full-scale production brewery in Indianapolis since the Indianapolis Brewing Company closed in 1948. In just a couple of years, they have become the 3rd largest brewery in Indiana while rocking the 2011 Great American Beer Festival by bringing home 8 medals for their beer! For those of you keeping score at home, that's placing in nearly 20% of every category!

So anyway, we expected to taste a few of their beers and bring back two kegs for the pub. Upon arrival and finding our way into the tasting room, our dreams of drinking a full pint of refreshing brew after the long drive were smashed. Apparently, and I knew this but had forgotten, full pints cannot be sold in a brewery without food also being available. This meant that we were tasting their lineup in shot glass sized cups, one at a time. While waiting for our pours to be brought over to us, we watched as a new 90 barrel fermenter and a bright tank were installed. It's always fun to witness a brewery expanding right before our eyes!

We sipped and discussed each of the beers available, starting with their house beers which consisted of Sunlight (Cream Ale, 5.3%), Wee Mac (Scottish Ale, 5.3%), Bitter Druid (ESB, 5.8%) and Osiris (Pale Ale, 5.6%). The only Sun King beer I had experienced prior to this visit was Osiris, when it was on tap at "The Pub" in Granger, IN. What I began to notice about their lineup was that each beer was solid, flavorful and refreshing. I wasn't blown away with any of these four, but instead I was impressed with how drinkable each one was. These beers had zero pretension, they won't coat your mouth like motor oil, nor will they burn off your taste buds. In my opinion, these four are perfect for socializing, drinking with friends and enjoying good beer without snobbery. Trying to convert a Bud-Miller-Coors zombie into a Craft Beer drinker? Have them try Sunlight or Osiris, and watch as they realize that there is so much more to beer than the "fizzy yellow stuff" they've been accustomed to.

Next up was their season/specialty lineup, which typically gets my attention at most breweries. Available at the time we were there was Colt's 444 (Malt Liquor, 6%), Rathskeller (Amber, 5%) and El Gallo Negro (Black IPA, 7%). Colt's 444 was the first malt liquor I've ever had from a craft brewery, and first of its kind since a bottle of Olde English about 10 years ago; I was surprised at how good it was! Colt's 444 was a refreshing lager with a thin, sweet corn body. Not something I would typically go for, but I liked it. After the shot of malt liquor was the Rathskeller Amber. Although I didn't take specific notes on any of the beers, I remember this being a very good, caramelly sweet amber, a beer I hope to see on tap around South Bend in the future.

Last up, or so I thought at the time, was El Gallo Negro. Black IPAs are quickly becoming one of my favorite styles, which unfortunately can be hit or miss. A few of the best representations that I've tasted include Anger from Greenbush, Hop in the Dark from Deschutes and 15th Anniversary from Stone...  add El Gallo Negro to that list! The Black Rooster has great hop aroma, combined with a very nice roasted malt backbone, ending with a bitter slap in the face. Jeremy agreed that we should bring a keg of this back to Fiddler's Hearth...

We were done within a half hour, decided to get the invoice for what ended up being 5 kegs (we went there for 2) and move along to our next stop, until Debby (Office Manager, rockstar) realized Jeremy was from a restaurant, and we were planning a huge craft beer bash just 3 days later... What started out as a good time began snowballing into one of the coolest experiences I've had while exploring this hobby! When I asked if they had anything they would like us to pass out to patrons for the party while Sun King beer was on tap, they generously supplied us with tons of stuff!

While they were pulling the schwag bags together for us, Jeremy and I were hanging out with guys involved in Sun King sales, Eric and Dustin. These guys represent the brewery well with their passion for beer and great hospitality. With CanFest in Reno quickly approaching, the brewery was preparing some of their brew for the event, one of which they cracked open for us to try; Jungle Room. Jungle Room (Imperial IPA, 10%) is a twist on their Grapefruit Jungle, with guava, peach and grapefruit notes. This totally hop-forward beer was nothing short of incredible! There are only a handful of beers I would drive further than an hour for, this is one of them.

After a larger pour of our brew of choice (more El Gallo Negro for me), Dustin set out to give us a tour of their brewery. If I didn't know any better, I would say this brewery has been open for at least 5 years based on how large and efficient their operation is. With an eye toward expansion, Dustin talked about increasing the footprint of their brewery, along with continuing to pump out more amazing craft beer. Of course I had to ask, when will we see Sun King is South Bend? According to Eric, every time discussions around branching out come up, it seems like another local burst in demand for their beer occurs. Instead of spreading themselves too thin, they have opted to continue to supply those that helped get them to this point, the Indianapolis market. Although this is a bummer for South Bend, I certainly applaud their loyalty, and still hold out hope for their beer further north.

So what started as a quick trip to Sun King to pick up two kegs, turned into a great experience hanging out with the employees of the brewery, tasting amazing beer and bringing back five kegs for the patrons of Fiddler's Hearth. We appreciate the hospitality we were shown while there, along with the great schwag for the event and the tasty specialty brews they poured for us. Consider Jeremy and I the newest in a long list of fans!

By the way, if you're interested in trying beer from Sun King, check out Fiddler's Hearth while it's still flowing, because once it's out, it's out... or until our next road trip!

The Beer Is Good at Fiddler's Hearth Update

After over two months of planning, we are finally only one week away from the first annual The Beer Is Good at Fiddler's Hearth event! If this is the first time you've heard of this, we'd like to invite you out to Fiddler's Hearth on Main Street in South Bend to enjoy a huge list of really great craft beer that you wouldn't normally find around South Bend, or anywhere for that matter. We've already let the cat out of the bag with Great Divide Espresso Oak Aged Yeti Imperial Stout, 2010 Founders Nemesis Barleywine, and a special beer we brewed with Four Horsemen, but there are also a ton of others that we haven't mentioned (although if you look at the food specials, I bet you can pick out a 4th...)!

As for the real reason I'm posting an update... The Food Is Good! I received an email last night from Sean at Fiddler's regarding the food specials and now I'm almost as excited about that as I am about the beer! Their Chef did a great job of making sure there is something for everyone, and crafting food that would not only pair well with the incredible beer lineup, but also soak up some of that high gravity brew that you will be enjoying.

Prices haven't been made official, but from what I'm hearing, it sounds like everything is going to be very reasonable. So without further ado...

1. Beef short rib stew in a bread bowl
2. Lamb “lollypops” with spicy chimichurri sauce
3. Mussels steamed with 2009 Sierra Nevada Bigfoot Barleywine
4. Portabella fries with spicy sour cream sauce
5. Irish flatbread topped with rasher bacon, apple, caramelized onion and warm brie sauce
6. Montecristo sandwich
7. Soft pretzel necklace
8. Apple fritter with homemade caramel sauce

Greenbush Launch Event at Fiddler's Hearth

"Good Beer Wins" and now so do we!

Excellent news today from Michigan Microbrews that Greenbush Brewing Company will be throwing a launch party at South Bend's own Fiddler's Hearth next week.

Wednesday, October 12th, starting at 5:00pm, you'll be able to sample beers from the following tentative - subject to change, of course - draft list:

- Memento Mori (6.3% Oktoberfest Ale)
- Dunegras (6.7% IPA)
- Anger (7.6% Black IPA)
- Retribution (8.3% Belgian Hybrid)
- 1825 (9.3% Belgian Strong)
- Pain (11.2% Imperial Cream Stout)

For the many of us who haven't been able to make the ~50 minute trip up to Sawyer, MI yet, and/or don't live in Michigan or Illinois where Greenbush is currently available, here's our chance to sample six of their brews right in our own backyard. I know I'm hoping to attend.

Live in Michigan and still thirsting for Greenbush closer to home? There will also be launch parties at Hopcat in Grand Rapids on October 20th and Crunchy's in East Lansing on October 26th.

Collaboration Brew with Four Horsemen Brewing Co.

And by collaboration I mean, Stephen and Ben from FHBC allowed Jeremy from Fiddler's Hearth and I to choose what to brew out of two style options, as well as perform most of the manual labor under Stephen's very thorough and detailed tutelage. Some of you know what I do for a living, and it has absolutely nothing to do with manual labor, but with that said, pouring malt into the liquor and stirring is probably the most fun I've had in a long time. Of course they didn't just invite us down to brew with them for any old reason, they did so because we plan to release this special, high gravity beer for all to try at "The Beer is Good at Fiddler's Hearth" event on November 5th.

Think you have FHBC figured out? Think again...

While the liquor was heating up, Stephen, Ben, Jeremy and I all had a great opportunity to talk about their beer and where they fit into the regional craft beer scene. I think we all know what they aren't. FHBC isn't about huge, in-you-face hop explosions or motor-oil thick stouts aged in barrels that Merlin originally used to store potions. They are being different by not being extreme; brewing beers that are easy to drink and won't knock you on your ass after one or two. Don't like a particular beer they have on tap? Try again in a couple of weeks, because they are diligently tweaking the recipes to get them just the way they want them.

Amid the brewing, talking shop and watching ESPN, they also brought out some very special beers to sample from other breweries. I won't give away the styles or breweries we "researched" in case they want to keep what they are working on a surprise, but Jeremy and I had a lot of fun. Stephen's knowledge of the style, its history, how it's brewed and why was more in depth than I could have imagined.

When it comes to the beer geeks, well they aren't easy to please... I know because I'm a card carrying member of this club. If the session beers that FHBC is crafting now aren't your thing, look for their higher gravity brew they will be tinkering with soon. Overall, their goal is to perfect the styles they consider to be their flagship products, before going off on wild tangents.

I originally intended this piece to be about the special FHBC brew that Jeremy and I came to help out with, but it quickly turned into our entire experience with these guys. If you haven't stopped out to the tasting room, I highly recommend it. They are passionate and knowledgeable about beer, they have a vision for how they fit into the beer scene, and are extremely welcoming. Jeremy and I agreed, hanging out with these guys was one of the coolest experiences we've had during our journey through the craft beer world.

Make sure to stop by Fiddler's Hearth on November 5th to taste this latest creation, it's certain to not disappoint.
